A light therapy lamp can help you better withstand the lack of light in winter.

The benefits of light therapy

When winter comes, the sun becomes scarcer, the days get shorter and our morale takes a hit. Indeed, the sunlight is directly on our body and our mind. We now know that the light causes the secretion of cortisol, also known as the hormone of "positive stress" that gives us "pep" to face the day.

Conversely, daylight prevents the secretion of melatonin, the hormone that causes sleep. So more the day is bright and the night is dark, the more your sleep will be good and relaxing. For you, light therapy can be a solution. So if you are sensitive to the lack of light in winter, invest in a light box.

Choosing your light box

The unit of measurement of illuminance is the lux. Light exposure of 10,000 lux for 30 minutes a day is recommended to give you the necessary energy. The ideal is to put you in the morning at breakfast, for the best start to the day.

Invest therefore in a lamp at 10,000 lux for optimum efficiency. Warning, you will stand away from the lamp, more efficiency will decrease. Count 2500 lux at 50 cm, 5000 lux to about 35 cm and 10 000 lux at 25 cm. The effects are felt after about 5 days. Repeat every morning in autumn and winter and all year if you have staggered hours.

Choose a lamp that meets European standards and medical. Be sure to find the medical CE marking 93/42 / EEC on the device to be sure of a quality product. Without this marking, impossible to know if the lamp meets safety standards, namely the emission of ultraviolet, which is prohibited and especially dangerous.

Light therapy lamps come in all shapes, round, oval, flattened. Their prices range between 150 and $ 300.
